Rei Kawakubo is a self-taught Japanese fashion designer known for her avant-garde clothing designs and her high fashion label, Comme des Garçons (CdG) which was founded in 1969. There are several branches under CdG but this is under the Comme des Garcons Homme Plus line. CdG Homme Plus is the second most abstract label within the lines of CdG. Founded in 1984, it was immediately shown at Paris Fashion Week. CdG Homme Plus serves as Kawakubo’s purest vision of the wardrobe of a man.
Even though CdG debuted as a womenswear brand, she famously stated that “the basics of clothing lie in men’s fashion,” principle of which is the suit. With that being said, Homme Plus has been using “broken tailoring”: cut-out suits, elongated and asymmetrical proportions and the use of non-traditional materials. For Kawakubo, her avant-garde menswear is a study in the “purest” form of clothing, which she in turn destroys, rebuilds and inverts in a way that only she can. For collectors, Homme Plus is the answer for those looking to immerse in Kawakubo's genius.
