Kapital Okabilly Patchwork Cargo Jeans
Kapital Okabilly Patchwork Cargo Jeans
Father and son duo Toshikiyo and Kiro Hirata’s Kapital is the culmination of the dense history and culture of Japan. To begin, Toshikiyo stumbled across a passion for karate which led him to America where he found American denim. After returning to Japan, he began studying denim manufacturing. After several years he opened up his first factory in 1984 then his first storefront for denim and vintage clothing in 1995. In 1996 he released his first original denim line titled “TH”. The evolution began when Toshikiyo’s son, Hiro, left for the states to study abroad and further his education. Upon returning to Japan in 1996, Kiro began working as an apparel designer at Americana-inspired brand. With the knowledge and experienced gained there, he returned to the family business in 2002 and founded the modern version of Kapital with his father.
David Sedaris described Kapital’s clothing as, “The clothes they sell are new but appear to have been previously worn, perhaps by someone who was shot or stabbed and then thrown off a boat. Everything looks as if it had been pulled from the evidence rack at a murder trial. I don’t know how they do it. Most distressed clothing looks fake, but not theirs, for some reason.”
Kapital has made a name for itself in delivering on Japanese standards like Shisiko and Boro denim, but it’s the way they reshape them distinctly that makes Kapital a consistent favorite. Kapital’s Okabilly denim reworks faded indigo patches of traditional Boro denim and replacing them with colorful, printed patches, unique stitched lettering, blowout reinforcements and hand placed distressing throughout. All pairs are made unique with this one featuring a slight flare at the hem. Gorgeous.
